After a long wait and a very secretive build-up Mazda have officially unveiled the fourth edition of the worlds best selling sports car, the Mazda MX5 or Miata as it’s referred to in the US.
From the images released to us by Mazda it seems we weren’t too far off the mark with our predictions in our post from a few months back. New ND Model?
Apart from a slight change to the front end (sharper headlights and fogs), the styling is almost identical to the image that was leaked a couple of months ago.
We can also see that the rear of the car adorns a badge that reads “SKYACTIV”, Mazda spoke of this at this years New York Motor Show, so despite this car looking like a facelift to the previous ‘NC’ anniversary edition, this ND model is actually based on a new lower and lightened chassis, which should improve on the nimble handling capabilities that the MX5 is renowned for. The new car will be lighter and faster than the previous model, and personally I think they have given the car more of an edge with new styling.
Details on the power plant for this car have yet to come through but we will be sure to update this when we hear more. A 2.0L SKYACTIV engine is a likely option, paired with a 6 speed gearbox with LSD, electronic steering and a perfect 50:50 weight balance.
There has been a lot of buzz around the launch of this car and it’s clear to see why. Having owned MX5’s in the past I’m excited by this latest offering by the Japanese car maker and can honestly say I look forward to test driving this car to see what it has to offer and how it compares to previous models.
