Ford has announced that the all-new Ford Mustang will deliver 0-62mph acceleration in less than five seconds – making it the fastest accelerating Ford coupé ever offered in Europe.
It has also been revealed that more than 1,200 customers have already placed an order for the all-new Ford Mustang in Britain – and a further 2,200 across Europe.
The Ford Mustang – due to go on sale in Europe for the first time in the car’s 50-year history – is available with Ford’s 5.0-litre V8 engine delivering 421PS and 530Nm of torque, or the more fuel-efficient 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine delivering 317PS and 432Nm of torque.
The 5.0-litre V8 fastback with six-speed manual gearbox reaches 62mph from standstill in 4.8sec –faster than any Ford coupé in Europe since the limited Ford GT supercar launched in 2005. The Ford Mustang 2.3-litre EcoBoost fastback manual reaches the marker in a very respectable 5.8sec.
Ford Mustang drivers can optimise the car’s performance by using selectable drive modes and on track can use Track Apps to monitor driving performance. Ford Mustang 5.0-litre V8 drivers can achieve the fastest possible acceleration off the line by using the on-board Launch Control technology. The Launch Control system holds the engine at a pre-set value between 3,000rpm and 4,500rpm with the accelerator fully depressed. When the clutch is released, torque delivery to the rear wheels is controlled for maximum traction and consistent standing starts. An electronic Line Lock system also available for the 5.0-litre V8 applies only the front brakes, allowing drivers to the warm the rear tyres.
For those that select the smaller 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine, the car will deliver performance but also offers up to 35.3mpg fuel economy and 179g/km CO2 emissions.
The all-new Ford Mustang’s high performance engines are supported by a standard Performance Pack in Europe that delivers uprated brakes and cooling for high-speed driving. A sophisticated chassis and body structure, and advanced technology, also help optimise driving dynamics to deliver the sporty experience Ford Mustang customers demand.
The Ford Mustang uses fully independent front and rear suspension and rear for both sporty dynamics and comfort, including integral-link rear suspension that optimises ride comfort and mechanical grip, and double-ball-joint front MacPherson struts that enable large, powerful brakes without affecting steering feel.
The body structure is 28 per cent stiffer than the previous generation Mustang. Weight distribution of 54 per cent at the front for the 5.0-litre V8 and 53 per cent at the front for the 2.3‑litre EcoBoost contributes to responsive and precise handling.
Lightweight materials include aluminium used for the bonnet, front wings, suspension, transmission and brakes. High-strength steels, laser welding and hydro-forming techniques contribute to the stiffer body for an enhanced driving experience and safety.
The new Ford Mustang is available in fastback and convertible body styles with six-speed manual and automatic transmissions, and features classic design elements including three-dimensional, tri-bar taillamps, signature trapezoidal grille and shark-bite front fascia.
Ford will start right-hand drive production of the first European specification Ford Mustangs this summer at its Flat Rock facility, Michigan, U.S.
The car will be available in 10 exterior colours and equipped as standard with 19-in wheels, automatic xenon headlamps, dual-zone climate control, LED tail lamps, and a rear diffuser.
Further standard equipment includes a nine-speaker sound system, and SYNC 2 voice control connectivity with eight-inch colour touch screen. The first vehicles are set to reach the U.K. from October 2015.
